lol! what a pic. i bet you were the only one there to take a shot of this. haha. XD i never really understood how locks worked. ~_~;
ship moves in, gates close, they pump out water until the level inside the dock is the same as the other side, gates on that end open, ship moves out.
technically, it's really simple ^^;
this pic sorta shows how _huge_ this stuff is. that thing goes like 15 meters down, and i'm at ground level!
